Things that make you happy can come from anywhere, if you are open to seeing them.

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

I did not want to go into my home-office today.

Some days, I am super-excited to get started on my day. Being home-officed allows me certain liberties, like running up there in my PJ’s and messy hair to jot down an idea or send a quick note.

Today was not one of those days.

I recalled a blog-post that I read recently where the author lamented that sometimes, she too struggles to get busy with her work. She found her inspiration by working in beautiful surroundings that bring her joy. In fact, she shared a lovely picture of fresh cut roses artfully arranged on her desk.

It occurred to me that I almost always have fresh flowers on our dining table, on our outdoor patio or in our kitchen. Why can’t I have fresh flowers, just for me, in my office?

All summer long our garden has been the source of most of the fresh flowers adorning our home. I grabbed my shears and stepped into the back yard – only to realize that the summer growing season is winding down and that a lot of my beautiful plants are tired from all the work they did this year. There were no good options for cut flowers…not even a single hibiscus on this particular day.

But things that make you happy can come from anywhere. You just need to be open to seeing it.

For Valentine’s Day a couple of years ago, the girls and I bought my husband an Aerogarden, mostly as a joke, but now we always have fresh herbs. Today, I noticed the basil needed trimming. I mentally reviewed the night’s plan for dinner and decided I did not need any basil. But the plant really needed trimming.

Hold on…basil leaves are beautiful! And they smell great! And I also have mint and it smells great, too. Why not make my office bouquet out of herbs?

Here’s my creation. It is making my office smell lovely and it makes me happy.

Now, I need to get to work!
